Mezban: the feast that welcomes everyone
In Chattogram a mezban is more than a meal. It is an open invitation.
From public sources
Mezban, locally called mejjan, is the traditional communal feast of Chattogram, hosted by a family or a community to mark an occasion. Its defining custom is openness: neighbours and guests from near and far are welcomed alike.
What is served
The centre of the meal is steamed white rice with hot, richly spiced beef. It is often served with chonar daal (lentils cooked with beef fat), nolar kanji (a bone-marrow soup) and kala bhuna, a dark, slow-fried beef.
The cooking is done in very large quantities by specialist cooks, and the particular blend of spices gives mezbani beef a flavour people from the region recognise immediately.
